[JDEV] cons of jabber technology

In the interests of keeping this post short, I won't
go into detail, but these are some of the areas you 
should probably research regarding cons of Jabber,
if you want to see the whole picture.  Note that 
every one of these also has positive aspects to it,
too.  But it sounds like you've already got the "on 
the other hand" side of your research paper figured
out.


XML is uncompressed:  The client-to-server and server-
to-server data streams are plain, uncompressed text.
This isn't the most bandwidth efficient way of sending
messages.  This will become important when Jabber
starts to reach millions of simultaneous users.

XML is unencrypted.  The base Jabber protocol has the
message stream being in plain text, making eavesdropping
more possible.  Encryption isn't a core part of the
standard.

It's not endorsed by any standards body.  There hasn't
been any endorsement of Jabber from IETF or w3c or IEEE 
or any of those type of groups.

It's not commercially endorsed by a major company.  Open 
source is great, but the fact that neither AOL or Microsoft
has "blessed" Jabber could be a risk to public acceptance 
in the corporate IT world.

Jabber is peer-to-peer at the server level, not the client 
level.  So, it's not directly useful for consumer-to-
consumer file sharing, multimedia broadcasting, etc.

Jabber's interoperability with other IM systems is 
unsanctioned by those companies.  AOL, ICQ, MSN, or
Yahoo! could take steps--technically or legally--to
block access to their networks by Jabber users.
