[JDEV] max users in a single server

hi all,
We are planning to develop a jabber client for our
customers which comes
to about a million. I presume that we will be running
a single server to
acheive this. Is this possible? before designing the
whole system I would
like u'r view on this  issue. 
1)where is the bottleneck comming when a single server
is connected with a
million users..is it the file descriptors or sockets
or the parser??
2) Do u need Extra  hardware or a TCP multiplexer to
acheive this?
3)could u tell me some plans on how to acheive my
goal?
