I'd be surprised if you could compile Jabber 1.4 if you're still
experiencing the "gcc 2.96" problem. Generally speaking, I'd strongly
encourage you to install the update provided by Red Hat to correct this
problem. The errata were released on 2000-12-19 and are available here:
