[jdev] extending XMPP with custom XML data

I am writing a custom XMPP app with chat, but now I want to transfer data
(xml) in addition to regular chat. I want to be able to utilize all of the
existing jabber data and connections etc...

On the other hand, I don't to complicate chat communications by having "non
chat" communication in the same stream of data. For example, I don't want a
user to see this data in their chat logs etc. Who knows what other
complications would arise.

I don't even know where or how to search to get help on the best way to do
this. Any ideas?
