There are some patches for JCR and mu-conference at 
http://www.marquard.net/jabber/ that you could try.

It would be _really_ nice if both JCR and mu-conference authors would 
release new versions, and even better if mu-conference would bundle JCR 
so it's just a single build process.

There seems to be a disproportionately high number of 
how-do-I-get-JCR-and-muc-to-work questions on various lists.
