Hi,

I think you will get better responses on the jadmin mailing list. 

As I have just set up what you describe I will attempt an answer.
First, if I understand your question right, than you are looking of a 
way of letting the clients search in the the ldap userbase? If so, 
than I can recommend fljud [1] which is an JUB (Jabber User 
Directory) component, written in perl, that performs queries against 
the ldap. Setup is quite easy.
