entirely possible, thanks to people who don't care whether they can have
access to open source / open standards versions of software.  MS could
easily disable the ability to play an MP3 on their OS, they just haven't
chosen to do it.  the demand for the feature is great enough that they
can't touch it.  the only reason the demand is great is because the
community cares about interop.

a standard isn't open if it comes from a proprietary vendor who may change
it at will.  let's not even go there.

and if you don't care about the terms of stuff you're using, you're
setting yourself up for a long, hard fall.
