Well, there are people who believe a technology doesn't exist unless the
IETF blesses it. To such people, SIMPLE predates XMPP because the SIMPLE
WG started in 2001, whereas the XMPP WG started in 2002 -- even though
the Jabber protocols of which XMPP is a formalization were defined
mainly in 1999.
