[JDEV] Jabber Capacity

Are there are any new studies or open source versions of server code documenting methods for exceeding the commonly known user limitations? 

Besides commercial software (JCS) are there any other projects that are focused on addressing the issues surrounding wide scale jabber server deployments beyond hardware?

Also does anyone know the largest known documented "live" concurrent usage of Jabber protocol, or what the highest known capacity limit for simultaneous users was and the specific client info, and or server stats that were required to achieve it?
