A couple of things ... what version of Yahoo-t are you using? Very early 
versions of Yahoo-t did not have this functionality. Also, if possible, 
running the Yahoo-t transport in debug mode ("-D" when starting the 
server) would be helpful.

I add and remove Yahoo buddies from my roster without any problems ....
