I am officially announcing the OpenAether project. Its been around for a
while, and some of you probably already know about it.
You can check it out at http://www.openaether.org
Its goal is simply to provide as much functionality for the jabber
network as possible. This includes RDBMs access and Calendaring, among
other things.
The obvious first step was to design a flexible base, e.g. a core jabber
library. Which is ready for people to start hacking on now.
The next step is a component for database access along with a client.
Several interesting tangents have happened along the way. A barnyard
(e.g. Snort) plugin to send alerts as jabber messages. A process
watcher, that sends a message when it terminates (handy for those large
builds, think mozilla). And (eventually) a sendmail API replacement,
mainly to get bugzilla to send jabber messages instead of emails.
I have set up tracking bugs to track the protocol conformance of the
core library.

For a quick and dirty intro on howto hack with this library:
http://www.openaether.org/docs/hacking_oajabber.html
Language: C++
OS: linux, win32(eventually)
Dependancies: XercesC, CommonC++, Mozilla(optional)
Things needed:
- win32 maintainer
- people to abuse the code and file bugs (also fix them ;) )
As always feel free to send any questions, comments, criticisms and/or
rants my way.
Enjoy,
Justin Kirby
