Emma,

You can retrieve your roster as many times as you want.  I use 
rosterBean.refreshRoster() and it works.

Are you authenticated before calling it?  Did you tell the rosterbean 
which IQBean to use?  Did you tell the IQBean which ConnectionBean to 
use?  Can't think of anything else at the moment...

A 'send failed' message from the ConnectionBean sounds like the 
connection has ended before you tried to send your packet.
