I think what you're describing is called
the "STMP Transport".  It's a project that
has been talked about for some time, but
I haven't seen any actual working code.
www.jabber.org may have some information
on this.

If I have a jabber server (js.com) with a username, is there an e-mail
transport available for the 1.4 server such that I can either send an IM
message (via a jabber client) to username at js.com OR an e-mail (via your
favorite e-mail app) to the same address and have it appear in the
recipient's client?
