[JDEV] Voice support?

The folks at Jabber.com are working with several potential partners on
adding voice support to Jabber, but such support does not exist right
now. Obviously this would involve some changes to both clients and the
server/protocol. Because voice streams require such high bandwidth
compared to text messaging, the way this is implemented in Jabber would
be to use the Jabber XML protocol and associated client-server
interactions to negotiate the voice chat, then send the voice stream out
of band, in all likelihood directly between clients (peer-to-peer for
you buzzword hounds), though that would require both users to expose
their current IP addresses. I think that Jabber.com, in concert with the
previously-mentioned partners, is also working on some server-side stuff
(using SIP and other protocols) to do voice conferencing and I think
also voice-to-text and text-to-voice stuff. I'm not sure about all the
details, you'll probably want to contact Griffin Caruolo at Jabber.com,
his email and JabberID are both gcaruolo at jabber.com.
Hope this helps.
