In the UK alone there are probably more than 600Million SMS's sent
per month. However inter network chargin is about to come into
force (about 3p per message) so lots of "free" services aren't
likely to stay that way.
SMS has a limitation of 160 chars per message, though some networks
and some phones support SMS concatanation.
There are also a wide variety of protocols to get messages into the
networks.
