Peter,
Welcome aboard. I think the reason why you didn't get a reply to your
initial post was that the question you asked was either a little too
vague or would take a little too long to properly answer. I wanted to
respond but I wasn't sure how to begin.
I would recommend that you begin by looking at the source code for some
Jabber client that appeals to you. Are your software modules all written
in C++? What language do you want to use to parse the Jabber XML
streams? PHP? C++? Something else?
Your second question: A lot of the documentation is out of sync, but the
problem is being addressed as you can tell from posts to this mailing
list. Your experience with PHP would be valuable in the effort with the
PHP jabberlib. How about contacting that author/group directly?
