[JDEV] error opening port

Hi,
when i try and start the jabberd server i get the following error:

20010103T07:47:05: [alert] (-internal): io_select unable to listen on 5222
[(null)]
20010103T07:47:05: [alert] (-internal): io_select unable to listen on 5269
[(null)]

the ports are open, jabberd is being run as root on a dual pIII 550, with
1gb ram running Linux Mandrake 7.1

any clues to what could be potentially wrong?
