It shouldn't be possible.  By definition if one has 'both' that's
because
the other person has 'both' as well...  This does sound like a bug.

I've seen another oddity with rosters.  I've had two <item/> tags in my
roster with same jid='xxx'.  That seems to be a little screwy as well.
