[JDEV] etherxd ?

Hi all,
     on  "etherx.jabber.org" I have read that etherxd is a daemon that
accepts transports either via socket or a dso, and routes xml Streams to
other servers.

What does the term DSO means?
How etherxd accepts transports via a DSO?

I am in the following situation.
    I have to connect my jserver to email server.
Will email server become an transport in this case?
If yes, How will I use etherxd so that jabber server will communicate to
email server?
