I've been trying to contact IMUnified via email for several weeks and
haven't heard back yet despite their press release stating: "We welcome the
participation of other interested IM companies who share the vision of
interoperability based on open standards and encourage them to join our
efforts."

Also in their press release of 7/25 they mentioned a spec would be released
by the end of August. What are the chances that 9 large member companies
with 9 different IM protocols can get together and find a solution within 1
month? Zero!!!

It'll be a long time before IMUnified releases something of substance that
will get implemented by the member companies, so I hope Jabber keeps doing
its own thing: stabalize the system & transports, and make it scalable to
millions of users.
