[JDEV] jabber and MySQL and huh?

what is the relationship between jabber and MySQL?  I've noticed a lot of
MySQL configuration info in jserver.xml but none of the docs I've found say
_anything_ about MySQL.  Does MySQL need to be installed on the server
machine?  how should it be configured?  What is the format of the Jabber
database?  Or did somebody just cut & paste a bunch of MySQL code into
jabber and all the database functionality is built in to Jabber?  How can I
view/purge/edit the username/password lists for clients and their messages?
