I can see that (though my inclination would be to write a client that can
handle both...) as a viable reason for wanting shared data files.

I still don't think that a shared file would actually work in the Real
World, though, for reasons previously enumerated.

Since most of your information is stored on the server in any case, the
issue seems rather unimportant.
