I actually had to customize mod_offline for a customer because ejabberd didn't implement XEP-0013. Unfortunately they weren't willing to submit back the changes that added it. The flexible offline message retrieval itself was key to avoiding lost messages in their mobile app due to constraints of their xmpp implementation on iOS.

Hi,

in addition to Matthias well-explained answer, I also might point out, that Peter Saint-Andre said about 1 month ago on the Standard mailing list, that XEP-0013 might get deprecated:
http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/standards/2014-January/028497.html
(btw: any news about the future of XEP-0013?)

So it might currently not be the best idea to put development effort into it.
Well, feedback would be good. My impression is that people haven't implemented and deployed XEP-0013 very much. If that's false or if you find it useful, please speak up. :-)
