What other differences are there between XMPP and IMAP<br>
Meaning, why can't you just use IMAP/SMTP as a communication IM
protocol?<br>

Perhaps because XMPP is an extensible protocol. Then there are a lot
of features you can't have in IMAP/SMTP protocol... (take a look to
the documentation)<br>
