I completely agree. "XMPP" is a geeky term.

You can call it the Jabber network all you want, that's fair use.
This topic came up at the XMPP Summit last week because some people
there were talking about building an easier way for end user to
register accounts on servers. For example, if some people were to run
a centralized registration service, would it be more user-friendly to
run that at, say, register.jabber.org than at register.xmpp.net? And
most of the folks at the meetings agreed that register.jabber.org
might be more user-friendly. (And yes, it does seem that end users
often think the only place to register "Jabber" accounts is at
jabber.org.)
