That would completely fail interop.

In the UK, Ordanance Survey map grid references are still used *very*  
heavily, especially by mountain rescue, but they'll cheerfully  
convert to Lat/Long for cases like this. (Indeed, they actually  
convert *to* grid refs from the Lat/Long from the GPS).
