This is exactly what the mxit.co.za guys are doing, you might want to
get hold of them for ideas?  They've written a custom cell phone
client, that uses a different wire-protocol designed for low bandwidth
to phones, etc.  The server is ejabberd, and I'm sure it has some sort
of proxy in front of it to handle the java midlet connections.
