This problem was caused by some of the namespace patches used to make
jabberd2 work with the Google Talk Service. The patches are discussed
here: http://j2.openaether.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=159 . Some of
these patches add a namespace declaration to the stanza element. The
Google Talk Service passed these declarations on to clients, possibly
in a modified form.
The Google Talk Service was recently updated to filter out these
namespace problems
