First, nice to hear that there is a new jabber dev. Second, do you want to
develop an own jabber library or use one which already exists?
If you don't want to write one, here is a list of libraries you can use:
http://www.jabber.org/software/libraries.shtml
You see, a lot for Java.
Next things which should interest you are the RFCs (
http://www.jabber.org/protocol/ ) and JEPs ( http://www.jabber.org/jeps/ ).
And of course I would look on some other clients to get some desgin tips,
etc.
