I suggest going with something like Alexey suggested.  You can do it
on linux or windows with ejabberd or wildfire (or other jabber
server).

You should look at agsxmpp
(http://www.ag-software.de/content/agsxmpp/), I've used it before and
it's pretty simple to use.

Using Jabber means you only have to write code for a single protocol
(Jabber), and the transports can take care of the AOL/MSN/Yahoo
connections for you.
