[jdev] what is a jabber 'service'?

Am experimenting with an application to monitor my
system and alert me via IM if I'm available. I have a
private jabber server running.

Have been doing it by writing a client using the
Net::XMPP perl modules however I keep reading about
these jabber 'services'? 

So (and assume no underlying  knowledge at all here)
can someone explain

1. What a jabber 'service' is and how it differs from
a program-controlled client.

2. Is it possible to write a 'service' in perl?  If so
how?

Sorry if this is OT for this list- I'm a total jabber
newbie.
