Since operators want to charge you for every IM you send :-) In the US, a lot of
operators are already just basically acting as a bitpipe for IM clients that run
on phones.
However in Europe this is not yet the case - and operators want users to start
using their IM solution (with possible interworking with other communities such
as XMPP) before they figure out they can just download a java xmpp/msn/...
client and run it on their phone. These operators do not want to become mere
bitpipes as it cuts into the big bucks they could potentially make off charging
for each SMS or IM.
