You should not have any problems with 300 concurrent users on jabberd 
1.4.3 -- we use it as the router on jabber.org (with a special 
connection manager etc.) and it handles 10k+ concurrent users. Perhaps 
there is some trouble with other parts of your setup, which the folks on 
the JADMIN list can help you with.
