The schema says xs:string:

http://www.xmpp.org/schemas/roster.xsd

In XMPP that would mean really any UTF-8 character:

http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2/#string

Currently the length is not restricted. We may change that rfc3921bis 
after discussion on the xmppwg at jabber.org list.
