Interesting discussion.  It does look like it could be implemented as a 
mini-server, possibly as a plug-in to existing clients.

The mention of jchat is interesting too.  Googling around it looks like 
iChat uses jabber for the rendezvous chat anyway, so I may have a look 
at how that works.
