Seriously, though, back to the original poster... using the raw XML 
method of many clients is probably better.  One mistaken typo in raw 
telnet and boom, you'll get a stream error and disconnect.  Even if you 
can break things in the raw XML input of various clients, you still at 
least have an input window to type things out in separately as well, 
and a nice formatted scrollback history for what came back in from the 
server.
