Yes, it's frustrating. 
The thing to recognize about Flash is that it's
basically an animation authoring and runtime 
environment that's been adapted w/ an ecmascript 
interpreter. The role of java/vbscript in relation
to DHTML is probably a good corollary.

The newest versions of Flash have made real
progress in maturing these programming
capabilities, but there are still glaring weaknesses
- like the socket handling.
