[JDEV] Example client code available?

I'll be the first to admit I'm a newbie VB6 programmer.  I've used example
code, picked up the Jabber books, and tacked together a working client in
VB6 using the JabberCOM object, that I now want to use as an interface to a
home automation package.  I'd like to get more example code that shows how
to notify users that are subscribed to my presence AND are online at the
moment the notice goes out - but I don't want the server to store them if
the user is not online.  I just can't seem to get it working and I'm pretty
sure it's a client problem.  Eventually I may look at making this an agent
of some sort...  but any help or pointers would be appreciated.  Where to
look?
