Colin,

I'd recommend that you check out the client library Smack -- 
http://www.jivesoftware.com/xmpp/smack. The different Java libraries are 
well suited for different purposes, but Smack is particularly good for 
those just getting started with Jabber.

We also have a webchat client implemented on top of Smack if you're 
interested in seeing it. More info at:
