Yes, but you still have _the_friends_of_ the general IM user (GIU), who 
are just a little bit more then general, more professional (PIU). How do 
people find their ways to the peer2peer file sharing toolS? You have 
Kazaa, iMesh, Napster,... They just:

GIU: Damn, iMesh crashes a lot :( What do you use to download movies?
PIU: I use Kazaa lite: http://... Just download and install :)
GIU: Great, thanks!

So, yes, I would say that the general IM user actually doesn't want to 
make a choice. That's why their choices are mostly made by sb. else 
(could be friends, could be a mailinglist, could be a forum, could be a 
magazine,...). At least, that's how it happes with my friends: I mostly 
make their choices ;)...
