In the perl world, its POE. And cary is exactly right. For POE it's a 
simple matter of writting a "Filter" that will turn XML into whatever 
representation you want. Plug in Filter into POE::Component::TCP::
Client, and you have a jabber client. If this can be a focused effort 
for the python people all the better. Bringing jabber to any framework 
is a positive, and I think it's great these guys are trying to do what 
the perl jabber community never could
