Beta 1 of Smack has been released at:

http://www.jivesoftware.com/xmpp/smack

No further announcements about the project will be sent to Jdev, so if
you're interested in keeping up the with latest updates, you're
encouraged to visit the site. :)
 
Some key advantages:

 * Open Source under the Apache License.
 * Provides an easy way to add serializable Java objects to any packet. 
 * Simpler to use than other API's.
