This would not enable the transport to push contact names as well plus
would confront the user with dozens of subscribe requests once he gets
registered with a transport that does auto-import.

Well, it all comes down to "how to do good and reliable auto-import
then?". We of course can stick to the original specs, implicitely saying
"transports are unnecessary and bad" - and therefore making Jabber an
unattractive system for most users. Or, as I would prefer, implement some
things that don't break the specs (as they are not forbidden at the moment
:-) and simplify usage a lot.

BTW I bet there are other applications for contact pushing, not only
legacy transports.
