I'm already looking into this, but from different angles than you
suggested. I was either going to try using a perl daemon, acting as a
web service, or using the http module for jabber.

I've started looking into this angle as well, and have seen a nice
example of a similar system, although it was a perl cgi for irc access.
I've mentioned this project in the jdev room before, and will sort out
the URL again.
