The most important reason for me is that Jabber's architecture is the
most correct from a technical and organisational point-of-view:

* No single points of failure - if yahoo.com goes offline, everyone
  using Yahoo Messenger goes off-line.  If jabber.org goes off-line,
  people can use a different provider.

* No artificial barriers to entry or constraints of any kind - if you
  want to add voice support to MSN Messenger, you'll have to pay your
  dues to MS.  If you want to add voice support to Jabber, go ahead.

* The protocol is open and well-documented.  As well removing
  constraints, this brings the usual benefits - e.g. XML is
  multi-lingual and extensible, SSL has a number of proven
  implementations.

* The division of labour is efficient and jobs are divided sensibly
  (e.g. I can write a new MSN transport without having to design a GUI,
  GUI designers don't have to waste time on transports).
