while not exactly similar, you might want to take a look at drupal's 
distributed authentication system [1], which claims to support jabber:

"Registered users need to authenticate by supplying a username and 
password. Users may authenticate locally or via an external 
authentication source like Jabber <http://www.jabber.org/>,Delphi 
<http://www.delphiforums.com/>, and other Drupal 
<http://www.drupal.org/> websites."
