[JDEV] Jabber library for Linux

I have been looking for a library to build a very basic jabber client (console only - not graphical) on a Linux system. I have looked at jecl and jabberoo and am having problems with both. Jecl will not compile (even using ANT) and I cannot find a simple example using jabberoo (or jecl for that matter).

Any ideas?
