At least in a one-on-one chat, the other difference is that most
clients will use the nick that the receiver has for that contact, not
the name that the sender uses for himself.
So, if I know myself as hildjj, and you have set a nickname for me
that is JoeH, when I type:
/me waves
You see:
*JoeH waves
