I'd like to help too.  I am an ickle user.  However, I'm just starting on
studying the Jabber library code.

Do we need to be able to do that?

Please correct me if my understanding is wrong, but ICQ 2000 and AIM are
based on the same basic protocol with some differences.  If so, how is the
AIM transport usable for ICQ?

Another approach I'm using at is Jabber::Connection + Net::ICQ2000.
I'll be trying this first since Perl is easier for me than C.
