Mostly it means you better have a slick setup to handle all the sockets
=)  are you using the 10% estimate?  Meaning approximately 50,000 of
those 500k users will be on the IM system at any given time.  If so you
can easily accomplish that with a jabber setup.  The current xdb_file
would work ok, but not well, plenty of others out there now though.
Dpsm or jpolld can do the sockets.
